Why It Matters in Ontario
Why bother crack filling?
In Ontario, we deal with extreme temperature swings. Water gets into a crack, freezes, expands, and literally "jacks" your asphalt apart. By the time spring hits, that small crack is a pothole. Professional crack sealing is the single most cost-effective maintenance task you can perform to avoid a $20,000 repaving bill.
Why It Matters in Ontario
Precision crack routing
Standard filling only seals a gap, but Precision Routing creates a permanent fix. We use a mechanical router to turn jagged cracks into clean "U-shaped" channels, ensuring maximum grip for our sealant. In Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles, asphalt expands and contracts aggressively. By routing a consistent reservoir, we create a "rubber band" effect, allowing the rubber sealant to stretch during deep freezes without snapping or peeling away from the pavement.
Our Process
How we guarantee a permanent bond
We don't just "pour and go." Our multi-step process is engineered for the Canadian climate:
Cleaning & Prep
We use crack cleaners, heat-lances, and high-pressure air to remove all vegetation, moisture, and debris. The sealant will not bond to a dirty or wet crack.
Routing (Optional)
For commercial lots and structural cracks, we use a mechanical router to create a clean, square reservoir. This allows the sealant to expand and contract without pulling away from the edges.
Hot-Rubber Injection
We use direct-fire and specialized oil-jacketed kettles to heat the rubber to at least 380°F. This liquid rubber is injected deep into the crack, sealing it from the bottom up.
Strike-Off & Detack
We finish with a "V" shaped squeegee for a flush look and apply a light coating of black sand or de-tackifier to prevent tire "pick-up."
Two Tiers of Repair
Choose the right repair for your pavement
Not every crack is created equal. At Sealcoat Canada, we offer two tiers of repair to match your budget and the condition of your asphalt.
| Feature | Standard Crack Filling | Routed Crack Repair (The Gold Standard) |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | Wire brush and high-pressure air cleaning | Mechanical routing (widening the crack into a reservoir) |
| Bonding | Surface-level adhesion | Deep-channel reservoir for 2x the sealant volume and superior adhesion |
| Longevity | Ideal for seasonal maintenance | Engineered for 5+ years of performance |
| Best For | Hairline or non-structural cracks | Deep, wide, expanding, structural cracks |

Frequently Asked Questions
Get the answers to our most frequently asked questions about Crack Sealing & Routing.
How wide of a crack can you fill?
We typically seal cracks from 1/4 inch up to 1 inch wide. If the crack is wider than an inch or has turned into an "alligator" pattern, we may recommend Asphalt Patching instead.
Is "Routing" really worth the extra cost?
Will the cracks still be visible?
When is the best time to do this?
